Scan technology and a digital scale under where the milk is stored is not an original idea. A Major appliance manufactuer (not on your clients page) had these technologies in a prototype frig as far back as the late 1990's. Did you search for patents when researching these concepts?

Cool experiment. Building on the self-awareness technology, I would like to see the future fridge be see-through glass doors and walls and have a negative pressure trap door through which food items are stocked via a robotic arm and conveyor belt. Fridge doors would not have to be left open and energy could be conserved. Plus us users would not be bothered with reaching things at the back of the fridge. A new fridge function could also be a button that is pushed and where the robot arm retrieves all spoiled goods so that the user can throw them away.

Nice post. Love that you've managed to give an in-depth insight into the thinking and process behind the idea - especially the "lessons learned for next time"-part is very interesting reading!

I think children do this well when they play around with Legos. Of course since the prototyping process can often get messy, it makes since to prototype with as little cash as possible whenever you're trying out something very few individuals have done before.

I cannot even estimate how much food I've wasted over the years because it expired before I had a chance to use it. When you scan an item, does it know the expiration info automatically? If so, that would be amazing - text alerts 1-2 days before the milk goes bad!! Also - if it could tailor your recipe recommendations to use the items that are expiring sooner before those that have more time.
Very cool ideas!!

very cool. I would be looking forward to next iteration of your fridge. This type of project shows the value of still having a number of skilled individuals within close geographical range

A Fridge also serves as a family dashboard of sorts. Group Calendering if you will, with reminders & tasks assigned to individual mobiles.

The ultimate "Killer App" would be an energy-wise self-sufficient fridge. Would fix a lot of the problems in the third world. Godrej Chotu Kool from India is a step.

Hi Jay, good question! Luckily, a couple of my colleges have already written some excellent post that hopefully answer your questions. Hit me back, if not.

Read this one about strategically planning and compressing time to market (there are 2 parts):

http://undercurrent.com/post/where-digital-strategy-planning-and-practice-overlap/

And this one on how to think about managing partners to accomplish your objectives: http://undercurrent.com/post/partners-not-vendors-a-digital-production-manifesto/
